How to calculate CPA

  1. 1

CPA = cost ÷ actions (for leads it’s CPL).

  2. 2

CR = actions ÷ clicks, CPC = cost ÷ clicks.

  3. 3

Break-even CPA = payout per action; maximum CPC = payout × CR.

Who it’s for

Media buyers

Know what one lead or sale costs and where the break-even line is.

Affiliates

Find the most you can pay per click and still make money on an offer.

Marketers

Track CPA, CPL, CR and CPC of a campaign from three numbers.

What a calculation can show

CPA above the payout

The profit per action turns negative — the campaign loses money on every lead.

The ceiling for a click

With a 40 payout and 2 % CR a click is worth at most 0.8.

Where the money goes

CR and CPC side by side show whether to fix the traffic price or the conversion.

FAQ

What is CPA?

Cost per action — what one target action costs: a sign-up, a lead, a deposit. For leads it’s called CPL — cost per lead.

What is the break-even CPA?

The cost per action at which you break even: it equals the payout you get per action.

How do I find the maximum CPC?

Multiply the payout by the conversion rate: with a 40 payout and 2 % CR you can pay up to 0.8 per click — more is a loss.

Do you show an average market CPA?

No — only your numbers, no «market norms».
